The Semiquincentennial Roof Restoration Project and the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation Match

Stratford Hall is repairing and replacing the roofs of three buildings connected to the history of the site and integral to interpretation and educational programming, including the Historic Stables, Gristmill, and Council House. As we approach the nation’s Semiquincentennial, Stratford Hall has identified these three significant structures on site as priorities for preservation.

How You Can Help

Stratford Hall was recently awarded a $105,000 challenge grant from the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation to support the Roof Restoration Project. The one-to-one challenge grant means that every dollar donated for the project up to $105,000 will go toward unlocking this grant and be matched.

To complete the Roof Restoration Project, Stratford Hall must raise $308,000 by May 2025. Gifts of all sizes are urgently needed to maintain the integrity of each building, to protect the collections pieces they house, and to prepare for additional programming around the Semiquincentennial.

Historic Stables at Stratford Hall

The Historic Stables include a section of the original stables constructed following the circa 1738 Great House. This structure houses many collection items, including two carriages in which the Marquis de Lafayette traveled during his 1824-1825 tour of America.

The Stratford Hall Gristmill was reconstructed in 1939 on the original foundations of the gristmill established by Thomas Lee in the early 1740s. It is used today for educational programs and production of grits and cornmeal sold in the Gift Shop.

Stratford Hall Council House

The Council House was built in 1951 as a gathering place and is used by the local community for a variety of events, meetings, and educational programs, including Stratford Hall’s Teacher Seminar, symposia, and more.
