Admission

Will any areas be closed during my visit? 

The Great House & Historic Outbuildings are closed for tours Mondays & Tuesdays, except holiday Mondays & July 4th. 

For weather-related and special closures, please check our Facebook and Instagram pages for updates. 

How much is admission?

Admission ticket prices are available on our Hours, Audio Tours, & Grounds Passes page.

What is included with admission?

An audio tour ticket includes access to the historic area, Visitor Center, garden, nature trails, beach, and Gift Shop. 

A grounds pass includes access to the nature trails, public beach area, garden, Visitor Center, and Gift Shop.

Can I walk the grounds without paying admission?

No. Admission is required for entry onto the grounds. 

Do I need to purchase tickets in advance?

We recommend that you purchase your tickets online in advance for quicker entry.

Tickets are also available for purchase on the day of your visit.

Can I buy tickets over the phone?

If I have purchased tickets online, can I change the date or time of my visit?

We can usually accommodate requests for changes that are made in advance. Please call (804) 493-8038.

Do I need to print out my tickets?

No, you can show the barcode on your phone or mobile device.

Do you offer refunds?

Daytime admission tickets to Stratford Hall are non-refundable once purchased. Tickets to Stratford Hall festivals and events will not be refunded or transferred. All sales are final. Most events take place rain or shine. Rain dates, if they exist, will be listed on the event page. Refunds will not be given in case of rain.

Discounts

Do you offer military discounts?

Yes, military and veterans save $2 on audio tour admission tickets. 

Blue Star Museum LogoAs part of the Blue Star Museum, beginning on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 18, 2024 and ends on Labor Day, Monday, September 2, 2024, we offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and up to five members of their family, including National Guard and Reserve. Visit their website to view all participating museums.

Do you offer senior discounts? 

Yes, seniors save $1 on audio tour admission tickets.

Do you offer group discounts? 

Yes, group discounts are offered for groups of 20 or more and pre-reservations are requested. To make a reservation for your group, please contact vc@stratfordhall.org or (804) 493-8038.

Do you offer reduced admission for EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer Card) holders?

Yes, present your EBT card at the gate to receive free admission for up to five family members. Children ages 5 and below are always free of charge. Available in-person only; this offer cannot be redeemed online.

Museums for All Logo

Stratford Hall participates in the Museums for All initiative that offers discounted museum admission for those receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits). Visit their website to view all participating museums.

Getting to Stratford Hall

Where is Stratford Hall located? 

Stratford Hall is located near Montross, VA in the Northern Neck and is two miles from Westmoreland State Park off Route 3.  Find us on Google Maps.

What is the closest airport to Stratford Hall?

Richmond, VA, and the Washington, DC, airports are the closest to Stratford Hall, each being a 1 1/2 to 2-hour drive away.

Is parking free?

Yes.

Navigating Stratford Hall

How far is the historic area from the parking lot? 

The historic area is a five to eight-minute walk from the Visitor Center parking lot. There is additional parking in the Historic Area for visitors with mobility issues.

Is a printed visitor map available?

Maps are available at the Gate House & Visitor Center. You can also view the map on your mobile device.

Is Stratford Hall easy to navigate? 

There is an accessible pathway that leads from the Oval (large field in the Historic Area) to the restrooms and entrance of the Great House.

In the historic area, there are brick and gravel paths. Both the brick and gravel paths vary in evenness. In inclement weather, the gravel path may become muddy, and the bricks can be slippery.

The ground floor of the Great House is wheelchair accessible. Please enter and exit using the Westside door. The East entrance requires steps. Stairs are required to access the upper floor. 

As you drive throughout the historic preserve, you will experience uneven terrains. Please be careful when driving.

Do you have wheelchairs? 

There are two wheelchairs available to rent, free of charge in the Visitor Center. We have a portable mobility device ramp available. Please talk to a Stratford Hall staff member for assistance.

What to Bring

What should I bring?

  • Comfortable shoes, as there are dirt paths and some uneven walkways.
  • An umbrella, if the weather forecast calls for rain, as visitors must walk outdoors to access the Great House and historic area.
  • A dog leash, if you will be visiting with your dog. 
  • Strollers are welcome on the estate but cannot be taken inside the Mansion. Strollers may be parked outside of the Mansion prior to your tour.

Can I bring my dog?

We invite visitors to enjoy this historic preserve along with their pet(s). For the comfort of all our guests we ask pet owners to observe and adhere to certain guidelines.  Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the grounds and lobby of the Stratford Hall Visitor Center but are not permitted in the galleries or other Stratford Hall buildings. Pets should not be left unattended or inside cars. Pet owners must pick up and properly dispose of any waste. Service animals are welcome at Stratford Hall, which follows the U.S. Department of Justice’s ADA requirements for service animals. Visitors are not allowed to bring emotional support animals into the Great House or historic outbuildings.  

Which items are prohibited?

  • Firearms and weapons, including knives or sharp objects, are strictly prohibited. Only law enforcement officers can bring firearms or other weapons onto Stratford Hall’s property.
  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones) are strictly prohibited. 

Is photography permitted?

Personal photography is permitted on the grounds and in the historic buildings. No flash photography, audio or video recording, tripods, monopods, or selfie sticks are allowed inside the historic buildings. Photography and Videography is prohibited in the museum galleries. Please be respectful of fellow guests, staff, domestic animals, and wildlife. Please read full photography policy prior to your visit.

Great House & Historic Area Tours

How long are the self-guided audio tours?

The audio tours last approximately 60 to 75 minutes, while the children’s audio tour is a shorter, engaging 45-minute experience.

At what time can I tour the Great House & Historic Area?

Self-guided audio tours are offered daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are valid on the date of of purchase.

What items are prohibited in the Great House?

  • Dogs
  • Strollers (these may be parked outside of the Great House)
  • Food & Gum
  • Uncapped bottles of water

Is the Great House wheelchair accessible?

Only the ground floor of the Great House is wheelchair accessible. A virtual tour of the Great House (including all the rooms of the upper floor) is available to view during the visit. A Stratford Hall staff member will be stationed on the ground floor and available to answer any questions.

What services do you offer for those who are deaf or hard of hearing?

Stratford Hall offers an American Sign Language tour displayed on a touch-screen device that showcases Stratford Hall’s audio tour content in ASL and with subtitles, and a map to guide visitors to all 28 stops.
