Stratford Hall Research Fellowship on Colonial, Revolutionary, and Early National America 

Stratford Hall sponsors a one-week residency available for scholarly research on a topic relevant to American history between 1607 and 1830, or to the activities of Stratford-born residents beyond 1830, and supported by the collections of Stratford Hall Historic Preserve.

Fellowship Selection Criteria & Details

Fellows will be selected on the basis of scholarly qualifications, potential project significance, and depth of need for research in the collections of the Jessie Ball duPont Memorial Library and Stratford Hall Historic Preserve.  

Eligibility: Ph.D. in History or related Disciplines of History; will consider ABD.
Financial award: $1500, and onsite accommodation at Stratford Hall (7 days, 6 nights), with up to $250 travel offset with receipts.
Term: One-week residency required, 5 working days.

Application Requirements:

  • Up-to-date Curriculum vitae of no more than three pages.
  • Brief summary of the project (500 word maximum), to include the current status of your research and anticipated outcomes. Please identify what Jessie Ball duPont Memorial Library and Stratford Hall Historic Preserve materials you wish to consult.
  • A one-page bibliography of secondary literature relevant to your project. This should be a list of scholarly works with which your project is in conversation, and is intended to provide a multidisciplinary selection committee with a sense of how you contextualize your work.
  • Two references ready to provide recommendation letters, posted by email to the Director of Research and focused on your research competence and scholarly endeavors. If you are a doctoral candidate, one of your letters must be written by your dissertation supervisor.
Fellowship Outcome Requirements:

Research Presentation

Acceptance of this fellowship obligates the fellow to present a research talk of general and scholarly interest on the topic supported by this fellowship. The duration of the presentation will be one hour with up to thirty additional minutes for questions, and may be conducted via an online platform like zoom or in person (at Stratford’s discretion and expense). This presentation must be completed by November 1 of the calendar year following the year in which the fellowship was received.

Social Media Post

One social media post (independently or in tandem with the Director of Research) and posted concurrent with residence.

Research Summary One three-paragraph summary on supported research for Stratford Hall’s newsletter, The Chronicle; due w/in 3 months of end of residence.
