A Statement from Stratford Hall

A Statement from Stratford Hall

Stratford Hall is the historic 18th-century plantation home of the Lee family of Virginia. It is a site, and a prominent family, that contributed importantly to the establishment of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the new United States of America. Stratford Hall also was home to a larger community of enslaved individuals and families less well known than the Lees. And so the history of Stratford Hall is at once inspiring and tragic, and relevant to the fractures in our country today.

As we mourn the death of Mr. Floyd, we acknowledge that the realization of America’s founding values remains in front of us. Stratford Hall, like similar historic places, offers context and can contribute to our collective effort to learn, listen, heal and come together. That is our responsibility and our aspiration, from our small corner of the world. Stratford Hall looks forward to continuing to serve the greater community with honesty, sensitivity and respect.
